GB: DIYPNP = Megasquirt2 + Seq Inj + Assembled + Tune

Postby gslender » Thu Jun 28, 2012 10:57 am

Hi folks...

Planning to arrange a group buy and assembly. I'll charge a flat fee of $100 to assemble the unit to your specifications, load the firmware and a base tune for a MX5 1.6 or 1.8 (note that you should still take responsibility for checking the tune and making sure it works on your car).

DIY will offer 5% or more discount for bulk purchase, but obviously we'll hit the import limit after 2 kits. So need folks to consider perhaps buying the units themselves (under the GB discount code) and shipping locally to me once they arrive. This will keep the money and shipping issues to a minimum and allows people in local states to ship together (2 at a time for example) and keep shipping to a minimum. If for some odd reason I get 10+ people interested I will look at doing an import to me of 10 kits and build/assemble and ship out. If that happens, I'll let everyone know how we'll handle that.

Prices in USD are as follows...
  • DIYPNP Nippon Denso 76pin Unassembled Kit $425.00
  • IAT Sensor Kit - Aluminum or Steel Bung $29.00
  • USB to Serial Adapter $22.50
  • DIYPNP Upgrade: Sequential Injection Kit $38.00 * needs changes to the injection harness or later model MX5's that already have sequential inj
Discount would be applied at time of order (through promo code) and would be ~ 5% maybe more depends on numbers.

Shipping is around $50 USD (plus the cost of local shipping to me/back but shouldn't be more than $7 each way - I'm in Brisbane).

If interested, list your name, state, car model, plus what you are after...

eg.
1. gslender, QLD, NA6, DIYPNP+IAT Steel+USBSerial+SeqMod

Gday. How soon are you thinking of placing an order? For myself I need to do a bit research and accumulate a few readys. Thanks. Adam

It will depend on the number of folks and how ready everyone else is... I'm in no rush, and given that you'll probably be making the purchase yourself with a promo code that will expire after a particular date/time, then it will be up to you to take advantage of the offer.

I guess there will be a minimum group order for the promo to be valid - after which if the numbers aren't high enough you can decide to opt out or continue at a slightly different discount. I'm not exactly sure of the details, but something along those lines will be likely.

I've had a few questions regarding how easy it is to just "plug and play" the ECU with the tune I'll be shipping out.

You need to have a good understanding of engine principles to tune it yourself. The tune that I will ship should start the car, and it should idle reasonably ok - but it will need tuning and you should buy a wideband EGO sensor to help with that.

It isn't a dark art that only selected people know - but you can't just plug it in and expect it to work 100% - you will have to take responsibility for the tune and ensuring it is safe for your car. I can't possibly provide something DIY to you and hope it will work and be safe for your car - it would be irresponsible of me to let anyone think that.

Any standalone system will be the same, and buying a preassembled kit ECU isn't any more or less complex than Motec or Adaptronic - the difference is that many like you have done it themselves and have been able to get a tune working without having to pay big $$$ to a tuner to do so. Again, this isn't a dark art that requires chicken or goat sacrificing to be effective - talking to people who can provide advice and your own interest and research will get you considerably further in life than just paying someone else to do it for you.

If you stay on the "safe side" of a tune (more fuel, less spark advance) then you will be ok - but if you want to chase max power then you need to go to a dyno and employ the experience of a general engine tuner. They can read the values from the equipment they have, and advise on where and when it needs more/less fuel or more/less spark timing.

Obviously this is something that thousands of other Megasquirters face every day - and the stories of blown up engines seem more related to mad-power-hungry turbo guys trying to get massive boost levels than the casual engine ECU hobby folk with a Megasquirt.

Happy to answer any questions.

The 4-Bar MAP sensor may be a worthwhile upgrade to offer... the GM EBC may also be attractive to some buyers?

I'm definitely interested but need to do some research first. Running m45 supercharger with reduced pulley, intercooled and 550cc injectors. Should be roughly 9psi boost with this pulley on otherwise stock internals for now.
I'll have to get back to you.

Probably should add that I could get DIY to include pricing on a Wideband O2 sensor which is really a "must have".... About $199 USD for either the LC1 or MTX-L which are both great sensors compatible with the Megasquirt kits above.

As mentioned, if we get enough interest I can negotiate a good group buy discount.

So, how is everyone going?

I might be able to get the DIYPNP kits down under $400 but you'd now need to buy directly from me, so I'm working with DIY on how to handle the shipping and duties - depending on how this pans out, this price may be able to include shipping to keep the kit price still under $400... so a finished assembled kit shipped to you for around $500 (plus any extras like wideband, iat sensors etc) with someone able to offer limited support in Australia. Note that you'd still need to be responsible for tuning and setup in your car.

If things remains positive on the forum, I may also look at sponsoring the site and setup an small cottage industry business to import the kits and act as a local distributor. There is zero $$$ in this folks, so really I'd be doing a hobby business designed to offer people entry into a full standalone ecu without having to spend 3x that with anything similar.

I know I'm pushing the boundaries of the forum rules by suggesting this, but at this stage nothing is sorted - I'm just still trying to gauge interest and obviously if the local Aussie market can't sustain that then it will fall through. I thought it was worth exploring.

Keen for anyone to chime in with comments and thoughts.
