I need your Ideas!

Postby shake and bake » Mon Apr 30, 2012 9:19 pm

Hi folks,

As a 3rd year mechanical engineering student I am currently undertaking a product design project. Im looking for ideas for a product that could be improved or maybe something that has not been invented yet. As a Car nut, im looking for something related to cars but this does not HAVE to be the case. So my question is to you: Is there something that you wish you car could do or even something that it already does but really annoys you and could be improved?

It could be your daily drive, track car or purpose built race car or maybe not a car at all.
Examples:
- be able to change tyre pressure while on the go
- a better way to make toast!
- A USB that still plugs in whether its upside down or round the wrong way

If you have any ideas just chuck them on here, it would be a great help.

Cheers.

Changing pressure on the go, but only if it doesnt add more than a kilo or so. :DIY:

4 or 5 wheel nut adaptor for rattleguns.
Use a rattlegun once and undo all wheel nuts.
Could tap into the production race car market, and generally speed up the wheel change procedure.

that or a trolley jack that takes like 2 pumps to get to full extension.

Cant tell I used to drift a bit hey :D
So lets go!

I have seen something similar on the car assembly line. I think I saw it on Cable TV, building prime movers and Porche or Lambo. Probably a bit big for your suggested use.

As for the new idea....
I vote for the USB that can plug in either way.

Generic in cabin damper adjuster that works with YellowSpeed coilovers preferably.

Side Mount seat bracket with height, tilt & Back/forth adjustment.

"Car jack" low enough to wheel under the front without requiring me to raise the car high enough from the side using my scissor jack first.

sway bar disconnects that are easy to reconnect, and don't rattle like crazy after 2 months..

or

Secondary spring set that can be locked down solid. within a 2 inch space.
ie: 400lb normal springs and 200lb secondary above it.
Lock the 200lb spring down for trackwork, so acts exactly as if lowered with 400lb springs.
Then for drive home, unlock 2nd spring which then uncoils by 2 inch giving extra height and softer ride.

or

Car jacks (think v8supercar in car jacks) that are temporary and able to be operated from within the car.
Run off motorised hydraulic or threaded rod, rather than compressed air.
ie; for use on very low cars or tandem trailers that have sides higher than the bottom of the car doors.(meaning you cant open them)
To load the car on the trailer, attach the temporary jacks to the pinch weld or underside of the car. Drive the car on the trailer, hit a button to raise the jacks, lifting the body enough to open the car door. Exit the car through the drivers door as normal. let the jacks down and remove, tie car on trailer.
Would reduce the need for specialized trailer builds for those with really low cars.
(maybe a motorized scissor jack that you could attach to the car as needed would do this)

I want one! :D

are you actually going to produce said item, or just 'design' it?

here is a challenge - develop/source/make fit a fan unit that allows enough room for front roll cage legs but maintains oem functionality, uses the intake port and is comparable with or without ac.

or

straight from a requirements point of view - develop a pnp, oem operation unit that meets the adr requirement of a demister and allows the fitment of a full cage.

A better side sun visor, every morning heading north the front sun visor isn't long enough and lets the sun hit you right in your eye, and not all cars have the extension built in. maybe a universal/add on one
