Any Marvel or DC Comics geeks on here?

Postby Steampunk » Fri Mar 16, 2012 10:44 pm

If there are, and if you are like me you have hardly read anything past mid-90's, go to your local library and try to find some Graphic Novels of your favourite heros.
In particular; Spider-Man, Hulk, X-Men, The Avengers, Batman, Nightwing.
I have been hooked again, not only because of the more serious and adult nature of the storylines, but at the evolution of the illustrations.

Try and find any books on these series (Marvel):
- Siege
- Ultimates
- Secret Invasion
- War of Kings
- World War Hulk
- Civil War
- Ultimatum

Never been a fan of DC except Batman, but try and find; R.I.P., Cacophony, The Widening Gyre, and Nightwing: The Great Leap.

Lots of changes that has happened and about to happen. Enjoy 8)

Of all the characters, I only like Batman and Ironman. I guess it's because of the mortality of them, and that makes them all the more nobler. Not to mention they're FRIGGIN' COOL

Only comic I really got into as the Maxx.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

No not interested in DC and Marvel. More interested in the writers than the artists, and less of the blatant commercialism of those comic book publishers. I preferred my heroes mortal and with noble humanity, and it's hard to go past The Phantom. In my "former life", I ran a website http://www.deepwoods.org and created/managed a forum http://phantomphorum.com/

Never been a huge DC fan to be honest, though recently I read the Dark Knight Returns series. I really want to check out Year One but haven't had the chance to pick it up at Minotaur yet.
When I was younger I used to read Scarlet Spider a bit and I have a Shadow Man #1 in my drawer as well as the original comic adaptation of Men in Black :D :D :D It's even got a FF7 'coming soon' advert on the back XD
I miss comics.... I used to aspire to be a comic artist when I was younger like Ryan Stegman or Anthony Ray Height but I lost motivation down the line. I've been trying to get back into drawing again but I really need to go back to the basics and relearn my anatomy and inking from scratch.
I've been working on a graphic novel project to keep me busy on nightshifts recently but it's starting to stagnate a little since I discovered I could bring my Vita to work

I read a bit of the Marvel Civil War series but it never really grabbed me. To be honest, I saw it more as a stunt to kill off a lot of their unnecessary unused/unpopular characters as well as a PR stunt to gain a bigger following in these digital times where people are starting to shy away from buying paperback comics now.

edit*
What the hell am I thinking.... I can't believe I didn't mention I used to drool over Dead Pool hahaha!!

Comic collector from back in the day here too.

Still have them all, but the characters that have always endured for me are The Phantom and Batman.

It never even occurred to me when I was collecting why this was, until someone pointed it out one day.

Have a period of Marvel and DC titles though, some of the X-Men and Spiderman story arcs (particularly around Spiderman #300) I found fairly compelling.

Also have a large collection of early/first issue Valiant titles, not that many people remember them.
Their light burned brightly, but faded very quickly!
Some proper characters and story arcs though, many which made a real effort to break the comic book mould.

Todd McFarlanes Amazing Spider-Man run is still one of my favourites.

I have CGC graded copies of #298 and #300.

i dont read a lot of comics anymore but still get the punisher series and pretty much anything written by Kevin Smith.

Like many, I got disenchanted when MacFarlane left The Amazing Spider-Man and subsequentSpider-Man series and replaced by Erik Larsen, And pretty much stopped reading ANY comics after The Assassin Nation Plot mini-series.

You guys should check out the events surrounding Civil War to see what has become of Spidey/Peter Parker.

Cacophony, and The Widening Gyre is by Kevin Smith, quite good and I enjoyed it thoroughly even though I've little idea (and deperately itchin to find out) what's happened since Dick Grayson left to become Nightwing.

The Black Mirror is also a good Batman story arc.
