Postby Old Dude » Wed Mar 14, 2012 7:15 pm

Not sure if these pics are of interest to anyone, with the exception of JBT, but they were very impressive,
if you like warbirds enjoy

Geez, restoring a classic car is more than enough work for most of us. Imagine trying to restore a huge 60-year-old plane.

I am not sure how this compares to the restoration/maintenance of a B17, but engine-wise it is probably a bigger ask. For much of the (hot) day it served as a verandah, albeit one which leaked oil and hydraulic fluid :frown: , but then they decided to fly it :D , which was fine by me 8)

Taken at Last year's Warbirds Downunder airshow and display at Temora, if anyone would like a quick fix more photos here ... http://edcory.smugmug.com/Other/Warbirds-Downunder-2011/20175584_XRMC6L#!i=1593365005&k=77ssnpm

What a fabulous restoration of a beautiful B17. It would be good to get a close up of the Super Connie too.

Amazing. I had a number of B17 models hanging from my roof as a kid.

Of the 12,732 B-17s produced, 4735 were lost in combat. That's madness.

Yes, fabulous photos 8), thanks for posting the link.

Sadly, I did not take any closeups of the Connie, too many people, and when I went to see if you could go through it, they were readying it for the flight :( , so I missed that too. It was only a minor blemish on the day, there was a great range of aircraft, most of them flying 8) :D . I'd highly recommend a trip there next year, if the show is repeated there (dunno, it may rotate around the country ... ).

Actually, ANY flying day is worth the trip there :D

Found a couple more of the Connie.

It was pushed back down to the end of the runway for engine start, and I was surprised to see just how long the oil smoke continued as the engines started up:

Some of the people crowded into the shade under the Connie.

Connie lives about 1km from my house and I get to watch her fly over every year during Wings Over Illawarra and the odd flight in between. She's the pinup girl for HARS. A fabulous sight! 8) Sunday 6th May is the next one if you're keen.

Not a warbird but if you love aircraft, this isn't too bad either.

My Cousins' father, flew Connies for years, graduating to the 707 when they arrived, not one of QFs most loved pilots, his nickname was "The Smiling Hangman".

Simply breathtaking. I've been a big fan of these lumbering giants since I was young.

Now I feel like watching Memphis Belle again!
