debadging.. whos done it?

Postby Caedrus » Tue Oct 28, 2008 11:23 pm

I can only speak of the NB8B. My SP, mind you...

The rear badges all have two holes drilled in them. I know this because when I enquired with a panel beater about debadging, he said "It's simple", then tried to pry one off with a ruler, then snapped it in half, then found two holes. Oh, and then had the temerity to try to charge me $700 to 'make it look better'.

I have subsequently filled two of the three badge areas, and I am in the process of fixing the third, which is the Mazda badge under the central tail light. The badge holes can be fixed relatively easily, I just screwed mine up a little, so I am repairing it properly.

So, here's what I learned:

1. The rear of the NB has holes for the badges;
2. You can fix it (I have been taking photos, and I will make a tutorial-type thingy when it is done); and
3. People have a tendency to dislike being called a mindless cretin in front of their employees; and
4. In a totally unrelated topic, I no longer go to a specific repairer in Newcastle, whom I will only identify by PM.

Oh and 5. You can learn a lot on this forum about repairs, and it is kind of satisfying, knowing that your repair will be better than some hack. I have a lot of gratitude to the folks on this forum.

Oh, and here's a link to get you started:

Th SP logo is just a stick on decal.

The rest have tabs that which mean holes in the rear panel.

debadging.. whos done it?

It has been common practice to have pins as an integral part of the moulded badge and for these to be placed on pre punched sheet metal and fixed with spring steel fixes which generally push over the pins from the rear- so check the inside panel to see if clips are visible. The other common practice is double sided tape which is die cut and attached to the badge. The badge supplier sends the badge to the car maker and they remove the release paper and fit to the car. If you have holes in the panel it would be necessary to fill and repaint or put a small canoe clip or rubber grommet to close the holes- not sure if anyone would like the closure method.

i have a NA. i only got rid of the mx5 badge. I heated with hairdrier, fishing line behind, most of the adhesive wipes off due to the heat, then some wax and grease remover whats left. never would have known there was one there.

takes all of 5 minutes

Does anyone know if the MX 5 badge on an NB is secured with adhesive?
