Help please - removal of wheel studs...

Postby Borked » Sat Jul 31, 2010 1:20 am

I've jacked up and supported Skittle.
Taken off the affected wheel.
Taken off the brakes.
Removed upper and lower control arm bolts.
Massaged axle back through the hubs hole and now have it free.

Problem is, the replacement unit has the issue of a broken wheel stud and I've NFI how to overcome this...

If you can get a wheel nut on the remains of the stud put it on but not tighten it down the use a hammer to drive the stud out, the are pressed in to the hub. If it is broken off flush with the hub us a large drift to hammer the stud out.

It is the removal of the stud that's the issue.
My issue is there is not enough clearance to remove the loose studs...
I've already got an old nut and whacked it loose :)

Ok, found a way around punching out the hub to remove and replace broken studs.

Angle grinder...
After punching out the stud using a nut and wood on the nut, grind down a lip to a flat surface on one side.
Then tap down the inner shield with a metal hammer to give you maximum clearance.
Between the two exercises, you are able to remove and replace studs without having to pay someone to press the hub out of the housing and replace an otherwise good bearing.
