Hard Top demister.

Postby Red Patrol » Fri Apr 02, 2010 10:54 am

Greetings Gurus.

My new baby (92 NA) has a hardtop that has a plug that connects behind the passenger seat to a cable that goes?????? Above the fuel guage there is a warning light that is for the demister. All that is fine but how do I turn on the demister in the rear window.

How do you all store your hardtops when not in use??

Any advise is really appreciated.

Demister advice here.

http://mx5cartalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=34566&hilit=hammer%27s+clubbie&start=15

You need to buy the switch (goes in the dash next to the interior light dimmer), and a relay for the boot.

A suggested hardtop storage option here http://www.miata.net/garage/toprack.htm, or you could go a hoist from mania for $175.00 here http://www.mx5mania.com.au/exterior.htm

I hope this helps and welcome to the obsession. It never ends.

Steve, from memory the NA6 didn't come standard wired for hardtop demister, even though the demister warning light is incorporated in the cluster. Hammer did an excellent write-up for fitting an NB demisted hardtop to his NA8, but it's easier on the NA8 as it's wired for a demister, although a different plug is required if trying to match NB hardtop to NA8 & vice versa. Hammer's posts:

First came up with this when looking for the above - it looks like it has a few posts that might also be useful:
search.php?keywords=demister&terms=all&author=hammer&sc=1&sf=all&sk=t&sd=d&sr=topics&st=0&ch=0&t=0&submit=Search

There's a hardtop trolley, or variation there of, that some people use:

I made my own hardtop hoist using supplies from Bunnings. It works great and is a cheap option if you have a garage.

Hi Steve,
As far as storage goes there are hoists, stands, and hooks for the garage wall.
Have a look in the search section.
My hard top has been sitting on the floor under the billiard table for the last 3 years

Guran, any pics of your hoist? I cant quite afford the $175 for the orig hoist as of yet and want to get my hard top off now that there is some nicer weather coming up.
Cheers

 Let me know if you need some more detailed photos/instructions and I can sort it out for you soonish (not this weekend).

BTW if you're really strapped for cash then I reckon a pair of compression straps with four eyebolts in the ceiling joists is all you need - just inch it up one side at a time. It'd be a bit slower taking the roof on and off but once it's up there it's securely stored, and out of the way.

I had an unused LARGE bath sheet that I rolled up into a sausage shape and placed it about 15cm from the garage wall, I then stored the top vertically, with the chrome brackets sitting on the rolled up towel and the top leaning against the wall. The top only weighs 19.5 Kg and is a simple one man job to take on and off. The only time I ever let someone help me (another MX-5 owner) we managed to fumble it and scratched my car!

I bolted a piece of 25 x 75 pine to a wall and then added 2 coach bolts as hooks.
Added some rubber stoppers where the mounts beside the seats are to hold the bottom away from the wall.

Need 2 people to get it down and onto the car but only takes a couple of minutes.
Same taking it off.

My NA6 did.

Could be because it's a Malibu &/ or a slightly later model - something in the back of my mind about there being some NA6s without the plug behind the passenger side seat for the plug from the hardtop to plug into.

The US 1990-91 (Aust equiv 1989-90) Miatas weren't wired for hardtop demister, but US 1992 (Aust equiv 1991) onwards were, however may not have all electrical components in place for an operational demister - see a quarter of the way down in the following: http://www.miata.net/garage/hardtop/

Steve, you might also find the above link useful as it has info on hardtop demister components.
